Six Living Clans of Nerva
The Six Living Clans of Nerva[edit]
The Six Living Clans of Nerva form the structural foundation of the Nervak Empire. Each clan governs a primary sphere and embodies a distinct philosophical and material principle. The Malik is not sovereign above them, but is regarded as the convergence of their authority.
The empire was originally founded upon seven clans. The loss of Athyrn remains one of the defining traumas of Nervak history and continues to influence succession doctrine and ritual law.
“Seven flames make one fire. Remove one, and the brazier smokes.”
Structure and Doctrine[edit]
Each clan:
- Holds dominion over a primary sphere
- Maintains internal cultural autonomy
- Contributes representation to imperial governance
- Produces champions known as Khazarûn
No single clan may dominate succession without destabilizing imperial balance. This doctrine became rigid following the fall of Athyrn.
The Living Clans[edit]
Bôrom[edit]
- Principle: Endurance
- Sphere: Mevik
- Reputation: The Unyielding
Mountain-born and stone-minded, Bôrom produces disciplined infantry, fortress architects, and many Vekir and Zaneth. They value silence, oath, and structural permanence.
“Stone does not hurry.”
Talîn[edit]
- Principle: Measured Wisdom
- Sphere: Talvekharûn
- Reputation: The Balanced Voice
Talîn are philosophers, chroniclers, and moral architects. Their influence shapes imperial codes and succession reasoning. They often produce Ezmalikhat rather than Malik.
“A ruler who cannot think cannot see.”
Sulati[edit]
- Principle: Law and Oath
- Sphere: Zenarûn
- Reputation: The Keepers of Order
The Sulati oversee sterf governance and imperial logistics. They are strict codifiers of oath ritual and custodians of procedural continuity along the Sëriq̃in River.
“The oath is the wall no sword may breach.”
Sultani[edit]
- Principle: Fire and Craft
- Sphere: Almashi
- Reputation: The Forgers
Custodians of the comet-forge and the Ezzenûn Talûth. They craft ceremonial arms and sacred pottery fired during the Traveling Light. Their influence is cultural and ritual as much as political.
“Fire names us. Fire unmakes us.”
Vûlkye[edit]
- Principle: Reflection and Silence
- Sphere: Biryash
- Reputation: The Veiled
Associated with monastic warrior traditions and errant Zaneth, Vûlkye culture prizes restraint, contemplation, and quiet influence.
“The loud man hears nothing.”
Eshadûn Vireth[edit]
- Principle: Vision and Dream
- Sphere: Tir Halavar
- Reputation: The Dreamers of Falling Light
Descended from astronomer-monks who charted the Sëriq̃in River’s celestial patterns. They maintain omen records and interpret cosmic cycles, especially following disruptions such as the Encounter on the White Moon of Cevran.
“The sky bends before the storm. We write that bending.”
The Fallen Clan: Athyrn[edit]
- Principle: Unity Through Force
- Sphere: Lost
Athyrn centralized authority excessively and collapsed under internal or external conflict. Records are fragmented.
Their fall permanently altered imperial doctrine:
- The Malik must never arise from a single-clan dominance
- Inter-clan lineage became mandatory for succession
- Talûth ceremonies invoke Athyrn as warning
The trauma of Athyrn is often cited during crises of unity, particularly after destabilizing events such as Cevran.
Political Interdependence[edit]
The clans are not factions in opposition but structural components of a single system. Balance is maintained through:
- Shared ritual labor
- Intermarriage
- Rotational educational rites for heirs
- Collective defense obligations
If one clan weakens, the empire trembles. If one dominates, the empire fractures.
After Cevran[edit]
Following the Encounter on the White Moon of Cevran:
- Eshadûn omen records gained new prominence
- Sulati sterf oversight intensified
- Bôrom and Talîn debated succession stability
- The absence of Athyrn was invoked in Talûth rites with renewed urgency
Many scholars argue that the psychological fractures following Cevran exposed structural vulnerabilities once absorbed by the seventh flame.
