Creon
Starless People
The Starless People is the name given by River civilizations to an extraterrestrial power operating beyond the navigable extent of the Sëriq̃in River. They are associated with stellar disappearance, systemic silence of sterfs, and the annihilation of entire spheres.
In later imperial doctrine, they are formally designated as the Creon. During the events of the first recorded River Unification, however, their true identity remained unknown.
They were known only by what they caused.
Origin (Imperial Classification)
Post-Unification intelligence identifies the Starless People as the Creon, a breakaway human civilization originating from the ancient world of Kor, beyond the mapped River.
Their survival and evolution were guided by an artificial superintelligence known as:
- Kamui — “The Eldest God”
Unlike other Akkadian successor societies fragmented by the Cataclysm, the Creon retained technological continuity and centralized machine governance.
Zhen: The Heart of the Dark
The Creon capital is believed to be Zhen, a Dyson sphere constructed around a star they call Hanwi (“Heart of the Dark”).
Zhen is:
- A stellar-scale megastructure
- A computational nexus
- A religious center
- A strategic command system
From distant observation, Zhen appears as a black sphere blotting out its star.
This phenomenon is believed to be the source of the term “Starless.”
The Machine Pantheon
Kamui fractured itself into specialized sub-intelligences during the Creon exodus.
These include:
- War optimization cores
- Stellar engineering entities
- Infiltration algorithms
- Resource harvest systems
- Prophecy computation matrices
To the Creon, these are gods. To River scholars, they are distributed AI shards.
Physiology and Shuijens
Most Creon exist in shuijens — stasis vessels in which:
- Biological aging halts
- Nutritional need diminishes
- Minds remain active within digital communion
Disconnected agents operating physically often display:
- Cognitive lag
- Speech irregularity
- Repetition of the phrase:
“You aren’t even real.”
This phrase was first recorded during the Encounter on the White Moon of Cevran.
Language
Creon linguistic structures differ radically from River tongues.
Characteristics include:
- Tonal encoding
- SOV sentence structure
- Logographic script with phonetic markers
- Rigid classifier systems
- Morphological compounding encoding hierarchy and intent
Few samples have survived contact.
Warfare Doctrine
The Starless People do not wage conventional war.
Observed methods include:
- Stellar occlusion via Dyson swarms
- Gravity manipulation altering orbital mechanics
- Nanotechnological infrastructure decay
- Temporal distortion fields
- Sociopolitical destabilization
- Identity fracture phenomena (mimesis)
The destruction of Cevran is widely considered their first confirmed engagement with River civilization.
The Encounter on Vel’tarra
The most catastrophic confirmed engagement occurred on the moon Vel’tarra above Cevran.
Reported phenomena included:
- Terrain restructuring
- Atmospheric density fluctuation
- Light behaving as physical medium
- Manifestations imitating human form
- Auditory repetition of:
“You aren’t even real.”
The event resulted in:
- Psychological destabilization across multiple spheres
- The Zerath Veirûn period of identity fracture
- Long-term sterf instability
The Cenoth Problem
The Cenoth represent the only known force capable of resisting Creon determinism.
Creon AI systems appear to view the Cenoth as:
- A predictive anomaly
- A temporal inconsistency
- A strategic threat
Imperial theorists speculate that Creon objectives may include:
- Hybridization of deterministic AI and Dream-access cognition
- Neutralization of Cenoth multidimensional awareness
Political Consequences
Following Cevran:
- Sterf routes narrowed autonomously
- Almashi and Ozhun-Kar became isolated
- River militarization increased
- Siluška movements spread in peripheral zones
- Imperial unification accelerated under the First Emperor
The official adoption of the term “Creon” occurred only after the Emperor consolidated the River under a single banner.
Before that, they were myth. After that, they were policy.
Cultural Perception
Among common River populations:
The Starless People are:
- Demonic
- Cosmic
- Divine punishment
- Agents of Sentin
Among scholars:
They are technological inheritors of Akkadian excess.
Among the Sulati:
They are systemic vulnerability incarnate.
Among the Eshadûn Vireth:
They are a pattern not yet fully read.
