Sterfs contain automated machinery capable of distributing processed resources between spheres. Though their mechanisms remain poorly understood, they function reliably enough that entire economic systems depend upon them.

Sterfs serve multiple roles:

* Interstellar landing ports  
* Trade and customs hubs  
* Military strongholds  
* Supply depots for travelers  
* Strategic chokepoints controlling access to the River  

Because the sterfs determine whether a sphere can interact with the wider network, they are the most valuable locations in the known worlds.
