== The Aether Thrones ==

The '''[[Aether Thrones]]''' are vast island-valleys cleaved from the surface of Levens in some forgotten age and set adrift above it, drifting slower than cloud, trailing hanging roots and veiled waterfalls. In common speech they are the '''crowns'''. To hold one is to stand among the highest nobility of Gethinisharr; their holders are styled '''Thronelords''' or '''Aether Lords'''.

Each crown contains a fragment or conduit of an ancient nexus-gate system — distinct from the [[sterf]] network in that it moves men within a sphere rather than between spheres, permitting the instantaneous relocation of armies, courts, or royal persons across a continent.

The air upon the crowns is thin. Visitors notice that every breath tastes lacking; the native-born do not notice at all, since to them it is simply life. No account of how the crowns came to be suspended commands agreement; see [[#The Doctrine of the Confused Natures|the Doctrine of the Confused Natures]] above.

The '''[[Eirhelm]]''' is the high hall of Aeryth Yaruun, perched above the throne-bridge — the site of the great feasts and of the private chambers where the monarchs conduct their business. Beneath it run servants' corridors leading to the marshal's quarters and the stables; beyond it lie open fields, the mews where the [[Yarvet|yarvets]] roost during the tourney, and the tourney grounds themselves. Yarvets are commonly said to roost in the Eirhelm's own rafters.
